So North Carolina is officially cautiously opening up all their doors (inside the respective spaces), well 50% capacity. So Now we are venturing out on weekends, sometimes but mostly its normal in my house. he works and me and the kid stays home. With this new daily blog I have put in a lot of crafting adventures. I've made stuffed toys, roped toys, storage, weavings, mending and alterations. I have sorted and moved and boxed for donations. Most of all I have found entertaining my child is...a lot of work! Pretend beaches, picnics and fishing. Blocks, music and dancing, playing pretend and don't get me started on toilet training a resistant, not really mentally there yet, 4 year old! I've also began a journal of mental health inquiries (the latest is a sleep study). All in all this past shelter in place has been a journey. Summer is here, though, so we shall see what can be done with that (starting with my husband's mother and her husband coming for a visit. :))
katjamiles: (Default)
After one to many anxious rants about my life and its future, I was assured that's its accountability would go to somebody else until learned that quality and habit. Thus the Google blog has started. I am unsure if this journal will continue or not.

However, this last week, I came up with a couple new suggestions-well actually, I think I've stated them before but I actually started a (unpublished as I am not that confidant yet and as it involves other people) and flushed out a proof of life youtube blog where I prove I am alive as I am a out of sight, out of mind person and that has caused problems with those who wish to know that I am in fact alive...

I have also mind mapped a couple of cushions and a skirt and actually contemplated mending things. There's also that stuffy I recycled from a failed ring stacking project half finished.

This quarantine would have been perfect for decluttering, crafting  and potty training my child too. If only any of us were interested in such things.

I seem to be either early or late to most things (usually late). I guess in this case it is better to be early? Anyway, the NC governor declared a  official shelter state this week for 30 days (or so I've been told), so...basically we do what I have been doing for a couple weeks now. I find it a bit wild to realize we are living history right now. I kinda wonder if this history follows the pandemic of old. The black plague of for instance was (from what I remember) spread far and wide on it's own where as the smallpox seemed to have helping hand in certain areas. Not having a vehical on a regular basis basically reduced my socialization down to my husband and child...and any stranger who my child seems "friend." I have often thought about leaving the group I joined mostly because of this as creating my own events has little to no effect. This safty measure just cocoons us all even greater. Also due to this, my in-law never made it, my husband and his work went haywire and my child is set on taking apart the apartment room by room (usually the kitchen first).

This pandemic isolation has not yet given me Shakespeare level of anything (haven't completed any craft other then this post, sadly). It has given me a lot of time to think or over think as I do. I read, I take care of my kid (who has been building lots of fun stuff with the rooms she's taken apart) and I've even reviewed Disney+ (while it is a good price and a has a wide selection, there's just not enough interest to keep it as we have Netflix already and barely use that. Plus we tend to prefer youtube most often when we do watch things that we don't physically own).

They say growing up and getting married and having something/someone to take of of teaches you, shapes you and helps you grow...this week I learned I haven't grown UP so much as...sideways? The loudness I always thought of as just being a quirk of growing up in the drama that was my childhood has gotten angrier and more irritable- husband claims it could be a possible rub off from living with him for 9 years- and the fact that I keep finding out my child is waaaaay more observant then I always think she is (considering she seems to be on her own little world), I beginning to wonder what the future holds.

I hope y'all stay safe and sane in this pandemic pandemonium!

Yay for 33! March started out with a nice outing of all my favorite shops and oodles oodles of chocolate in all its forms (starting at IHOP with chocolatechip pancakes and ending with home cooked brownies with fudge icecream in between)! We almost found out what the hype was with Ducks geille and bar. Don't  let the name fool you (although looking it, the spelling of grill and that fact that it has Duck in the name could clue you in) it is a shmancy fancy place! Wooden privacy booths with chandeliers and glass stained panels. The tables have soft lighting to match the soft atmosphere and the prices to match all that elegance. As we tend to eat early, the place didn't seem that busy, though the seting of the 2 rooms of dining looked like it could be very crowded when it was full without actually looking crowded. That night they even offered a chance to play trivia (which I thought interesting with the more softer environment). To no one's surprise, the screaming, screeching active toddler that is my child was very quickly bribed with a quieter screen time kids youtube tv app! The food was pretty good too. In line with its pricing, the portions were NOT the typical over sized portion but a smaller more manageable size-and even sliced and diced- that were just enough to fill us up but not enough to have leftovers, even when sharing between 3. Best of all, I got to spend  the end of the day with a good book. Woot woot!

Sadly the kid's got some sort of respiratory virus (so says google) right now. Finger's crossed, she peeks up by the time the in laws show up for the st patty birthday my husband has (every body gets to celebrate his birthday around the world, no fair, haha 😉)

Woot! It's Martin Luther King Day, here in the states! Thus I will leave some fun facts right here...

Martin Luther King Jr was born Micheal King Jr in 1929, on the day of Jan 15 (this was pretty easy for me to remember as it is also my mother's bday, heehee).
His father was a Baptist pastor and when MLK Jr. was five, on a trip to Germany learned of the reformist, Martin Luther and decided it was a name to aspire to. I think it's safe to say Martin took his cue from the his father and the german reformation leader. :)

King Jr was a smarty pants and entered college at the age of 15, though, he had to be convinced to follow in the family's footsteps.

Six years before his iconic "I had a dream" speech he found an "in" in civil rights leadership sharing his equal voting rights he also apparently foretold his death in the speech before he died...

The life a leader is a hard won unity as he was imprisoned a good 29 times and had a fatal stabbing scene a decade before he was assassinated.

Enjoy the 3 day weekend and take time to remember all those that fought for your rights!

So....HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! 2020, WOOT WOOT! So far this year, we have moved fully into the new apartment, however it is still stuffed with stuff, lol. We are slowly decluttering and minimizing our stuff so eventually our jump to travel trailering life doesn't feel so big...
The holiday season was a normal one for us. Since I've married my husband these holidays have been more of days off then any hullabaloo I've done growing up. Chinese food was a staple for a while here too, lol. Now that we have a drama llama princess of our own (she is turning 4 this year!!! Eeep!) I've been kinda crazy about her having THE TRADITIONS. So far holidays pictures are what we've been consistent about. I am also finding out that just being is awesome. Having those memories and moments of being together is a lot of fun. This past holiday season was the first season my kiddio realized that there is awesomeness in the holidays (mostly due to the music and decorations, :)) The entertaining portion of xmas came when my husband's bright idea of using her pups to "guard the magical  tree" that brought the presents totally backfired on us spectacularly as she ignored everything that morning BUT the pups she saw when barging into our bedroom (as she does every morning). It was amazing and awesome and hilarious  that it took us (the parents) pointing the presents out for her to see them and even THEN she was more interested in playing then anything else. :)

Goals I want to work on this year are: toilet training because life skills are important (and pull ups/wipes are expensive)...consistent crafting and reading explorations...and of course the dreaded life improvements of my mental, emotional and physical self being...
katjamiles: (Default)

As a kid...this day was more for the day off from school and the discounts/deals and free stuff (YAY FOR COMMERCIALISM!!!) then anything else. However, being older and married to military, I can see the importance/history behind the day more clearly now.

It all started 100 (and one) years ago when on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, WW1 warriors stopped fighting and claimed Armistice Day. It took 7 months to sign the treaty to end the war, a few more years (1926) to be recognized by congress as the end and then a few more (1938) to be deemed a federal holiday. In the 50s (1954) the Veterans organization thought to recognized all Veterans vs. just WW1, (due to having another major 2 wars fought) thus the term "VETERANS DAY" was approved. Confusion was then abreast as the Bill that passed several Federal Holidays-1968, though it skipped it's start in celebrating to 1971- (in the act of wanting more holiday fun and all it economically entails) claimed Veterans day to be honored in October (the whole fourth Mondays thing) that no one actually recognized and thus was amended AGAIN (for the, like, fourth and FINAL time), 1975, to it's right day of  11/11!!!

So don't forget to remember and thank all those that served!!!!
katjamiles: (Default)
As I might of mentioned before holidays/ celebrations aren't that big a thing in our house.  Since having a Luna, we've been pretty lucky in acquiring appropriate "costume" wear for Halloween though (as they have been onesies up until this year when she got princess play clothes for xmas of last year). This year was the first year she was aware of what was going on, too so everything was more...pronounced as she noticed the holiday seasons in every store we came across as soon as they were put out. Nonetheless, she made a pretty cute Belle (although not as cute as the 6 month old Belle of 2 years ago) and had a blast trunk'n treating at the local USO. As I am the push over in the family, I found myself lucky in that one event was enough candy for her to be satisfied and that she understood and enjoyed giving out the candy to the 2 knocks on our door, Halloween night. However, our family has not the patients or the attention span to wait as long as we did (even with the ghost craft and coloring book) for the trunk'n treat, so we will have to remember to be fashionable late in the future... or just wait and do it old school and knock door to door.  :)

So a while back my other half and I had a discussion on success and what it means and how it comes about (it started out as me explaining my new-not new business idea(s) of crafting images that stick out to me from mixed media the books i still plan on broadening my horizons with, and creating space(s) (and renting them out to the teachers/instructors who need the space, possibly with the intent to also provide the supplies as well as the space...but that would be expensive and maybe going overboard?) for a craft and/or sports studio/community center, with a kid care area for clients who need a break but can't leave their kids...).
In this discussion I realized that (possibly) due to growing up pains, my definition is built on expectations surrounding a professional/academic field and its ranking of promotion/years of experience and my attitude...is not. My other half, rightly pointed out that I, as I am right now, am actually pretty successful. I have a degree (or 2 or 4), i am still married after 8 years, my procrastination cleaning is tolerated (as is my non fancy grooming habits) and my lack of cooking skills. While I have...misplaced... my child (that kid can RUN!) numerous times and I fully do believe the universe or somebody out there (up there?) is taking pity on me and my driving skills (especially with my last driving home adventure! Let's just say I was Daddy Pig driving in France and leave it at that shall we...)...or they just think my kid is too cute to kill, I get to spend all day with her (the three year old) and read or craft while my other half deals with bringing home the bacon AND all our finances. I am pretty golden. Of course all my co-dependency will leave me in a pit of total despair (and living in my mother's house once again) if he ever chooses to leave me or die...

Hurricane Dorian just blew through my neck of the woods, so I thought it be nice to post some info on natural disasters! :)
"Natural disasters are events caused by forces of nature that cause destruction of life and/or property." (Neok12.com) Common disasters are floods, wildfires, cyclones (hurricanes, tropical storms, tornadoes, typhoons), extreme temperatures (heat waves, ice storms), earthquakes, landslides, drought, volcano eruptions and tsunamis. Fun Fact: Earth isn't the only planet to have these natural phenomena!

PLEASE NOTE
: in any natural disaster be prepared to evacuate (especially when you have known information beforehand), and keep a list of contacts on hand in case it's needed. Be cautious and careful and aware when going about, turn off electric/gas and water and if you are hunkering down and holding the fort, fortify yourselves with plenty of water, food, and survival (blankets, first aid kits, etc) supplies, be prepared for loss of power/communication and stay away from the outer walls, windows and doors!

Floods are dangerous flows of water that submerge areas under water. As water has a natural flow that takes water from higher ground to the lower levels and can swoop up anything that isn't attached easily and depending on the extremity of the flow can swoop up anything attached as well (trees, structures, etc). Floods are caused by excess rainfall/ heavy winds (that cause hurricanes, topical storms and cyclones), overflowing rivers, breaking of damns, meting ice/snow. The 4 main flooding types are, flash floods, storm surges, and rapid and slow onset floods. Planting plants/trees help a organic flood prevention! SAFETY TIPS: stay away from power lines/cables, watch out for thunderstorms/lightning, winds and rainfall

Wildfires happen when a fire starts in the wilderness and rural areas, Usually due to lightning/thunderstorms and human actions like not taking proper care of campfires, cigarettes, and lighting appliances. They can occur silently and unnoticed or suddenly with a roar. Wildfires are always quick to burn its surroundings whether it be vegetation or structures. SAFETY TIPS: acquire and maintain smoke alarms, and fire extinguishers, clear yard debris, fireproof/waterproof boxes for important keepsakes and documents, look for downed/ broken power lines and pockets of smoldering ash...and remember our friend Smokey Bear!!!

Cyclones: Water cyclones like tropical storms, hurricanes and typhoons occur when extreme wind and water storms merge together that are caused from the perfect mix of hot and cold wind/water temperatures. SAFETY TIPS: stay away from flood prone areas and watch out for thunderstorms/lightning, winds and rainfall! Mesocyclones (starting as thunderstorms that end in tornadoes) are extreme winds cycloning on/above land (versus it counterpart in/on water). As with all (oe most) natural disasters, when tornadoes touch ground it has devastating effects and is known to destroy anything that moves (and in severe setting anything that doesn't). Warnings of a tornado are calm/still winds and air, dark/greenish sky with big dark low-lying clouds and big hail, loud roaring (like a fright train). SAFETY TIPS: protect your head, put on sturdy shoes and go to ground!...or the lowest level and or most inner rooms like closets and hallways. If caught outside find a low flat ditch or trench and hunker down...and if you see a yellow brick road follow it (haha, just kidding!)

Extreme Temperatures: Extreme Heat (heat waves) are high heats for long periods of time often paired with high humidity. Dehydration along with heat strokes, heat exhaustion and heat cramps and hyperthermia along for the ride. SAFETY TIPS: stay cool protect yourself from the sun!...hats, light and loose/breezy colors, stay shaded (shade windows, under trees/cover of sun), sunglasses, sunscreen, stay indoors as much as possible and drink lots and lots and lots of water! Extreme Cold: temperatures raging in the extreme lows and cold conditions like sleet, snow and ice can and cold rain lead to frostbite and hypothermia; and create conditions for snow storms, blizzards and avalanches. SAFETY TIPS: stay warm and protect yourself from the elements!...hats, gloves, boots, sun/snow glasses coats, long pants and layers, keep dry, be aware of symptoms, (to much shivering, numbness, headaches, high/low heart rate, memory loss, pale/whiteness of skin) and salt/sand walk ways/paths....also I highly advise not to be an ANNA, ELSA, OLAF or KRISTOFF, just in case you wanted to try them out or something....

Earthquakes are "the shaking rolling and sudden shock on the earth's surface." (natural disasters, videos for kids, youtube: learning junction) Whenever the earth's tectonic plates find themselves moving into each other and crating some sort of friction (sliding/gliding, bumping, smashing) or "faulting". it creates an earthquake! I didn't realize there were as many as 20 pieces all moving about! 3 main types are: convergent boundary/thrust fault (one plate is "thrusted" over the other), divergent boundary (plates are forced or "diverged" from each other creating a rift zone) and transform fault/strike slip (the plates "slip" by each other). SAFETY TIPS: drop cover and hold on, if outside find a clear spot away from possible debris...while I have never been through any sort of earthquake this all seems counter productive as it's the GROUND falling apart...

Landslides occurs when land (natural debris like rock, mud and plants) slide their way down a slippery slope (to be picky, I suppose a avalanche is a type of landslide too, but with ice and snow...and "submarine landslides" that happen under water). Causes of this natural disaster are notably from other natural disasters (heavy rainfall, volcanoes) as well as soil erosion and human activity (mining, tree felling). SAFETY TIPS: avoid building by steep slopes, mountain edges, and drainage paths.

Droughts are long periods of time with less then average and adequate water/rainfall causing a shortage of water underground, on the surface and in the atmosphere. The effects affect circularly the soil/crops, people and animals (so basically anything that needs lots of water on a continuous basis to survive), and obviously often lead to shortages of supplies (like water and food) as well. 4 main classifications are agricultural, hydrological, meteorological, and socioeconomic. SAFETY TIPS: save water by reusing it and restricting its/your use.

Volcano Eruptions occur when the earth's innards/guts (magma/lava) gain to much pressure via gas and its minerals and spew. the 3 main types of volcanoes are active, dormant and extinct. They also come in shapes! A volcano or lava dome is mound like and spews the lava resulting into stacks near the vent, Cinder cone volcanoes are lava eruptions that break into smaller pieces and land in "cinders", composite shaped volcanoes spew lava that is a consistency like honey and the shield shaped are the non-erupting easy flowing lava volcanoes. SAFETY TIPS: cover up and protect your skin (long shirts, long pants), eyes and mouth, feet and hands and head from the ash (unless you're part of the Dragon Ball superheros then divert the lava and proceed with caution, lol)

Tsunamis are happenings caused via submarine landsliding/land slumping, underwater volcano eruptions, meteorite crashing into the ocean floor and earthquakes in the ocean floor See a pattern, here? Yes! It all occurs/forms under water! This means all the action forces the water away from the initial disturbance and because it has to go somewhere it causes massive water wave destruction (due to its shallower land to water depth ratio). SAFETY TIPS: hold on to something in the water (swimming will cause a push and pull tension effect pulling you in) and if in a boat go out to sea. On land, go farther inland and to high ground...and remember the only friend to thee waves is Moana (and possibly Ariel but I think that was more cyclone weather...)

I have been tuning into a lot of blogs/vlogs lately, to the point of doing some actual research into it to see if I could be successful at it. To begin with, it seems like a lot more work to maintain then a cyber journal! The consistent content, proper editing/proofreading and promoting work that is required is a little daunting/risky for this non-risk-taking, every so often journaler (I averaged about every 3 months this year so far). Also, vlogging is all video and I have a major case of stage fright when it comes to showcasing myself or anything I do in this way.

Although it did give me the kick in the butt to slowly start the process for my book of the week/craft project of the week plan. It seemed like a challenge to broaden my horizons, heh. I am currently in the process of taking books that catch my interest from the "100 best seller" lists of every Barnes&Noble (as that was where I came up with the idea) subject. So far I've completed one subject list (fiction) and going by that list (34 books out of the 100), it seems like this project will be a massive read! Granted this is just the list organization, so hopefully, I will still be energized to do any of it by the time I acquire all the books (I gave myself to the end of the year for the planning/organization stage). I am even thinking about producing the ideas that come from the books (especially the nonfiction section(s)) versus just reporting/reviewing my opinions on each book I read. Well...maybe not, the more I think/plan, the more expansive I get!

At the moment, my attitude for the craft project of the week is mostly just talk. While I feel like I have the necessary skill-set for the reading, I don't seem to have the confidence in my competence for the skill-set(s) needed to do any sort of consistent crafting (which is probably why my crafting entertainment is few and far between).

WOOT! Just came back from a waterslide bday party! Luna had a blast (to the point where she thought the barrel colored juice drinks she found would make the water you slide into just that much more exciting, lol). I think we are also in store for some race car activity carpet and playhouse wish-listing. Another adventure this week was the new playground at the park near our house. A massive structure (that is probably technically rated for older kids) with climbing, sliding, swinging, driving and noise making action! My only real complaint is that the plastic structure that connects through bridges has limited seating and (currently) no seating in the limited shade the park's trees provide. Actually, that seems to be a patterned trend with these playground parks I seem to frequent so much-limited to no shade and seating; it is like the ones designing/accepting the design forget that they live in weather climates from heat/humidity to rain/snow and how that would effect the material/people used/using it. Luna also managed to make a "milestone" (as my sister called it) when her second visit to the dentist resulted in her staying (mostly) put all on her own, without a "dadna" hug/hold. I truly appreciate the ingenious idea of the tv distraction, sunglasses for the blinding light/lamp and, for my child, the blue latex glove distraction that settled her down. There were some fun goodie bag/stickers/balloon rewards at the end too (ie, I don't have to shop for kid tooth care products for a while, lol)! YAY for Luna adventures!!!

Sooooo....we have a lot of natural debris and I have been thinking that it would be fun to burn it all and use the ash. Ash is used and can be used for many things! I googled some fun videos on making soap (the process is seems to take forever though).Wood ash is also commonly used to put out the fire palace/pit fires and melting the ice/snow. Historically and culturally it was used in food, art glazing and building materials, cleaning activities (odor control), and farming (like composting, crops/gardens and dust baths/pest repellent and soaking animal hides), I also noted other ideas like: dehumidifying the air and as an anti-mold product, toothpaste (eep!) wound treatment, tattooing and cosmetics. When this idea hit me, I found an article (https://practicalselfreliance.com/wood-ash-uses/) detailing most of the uses above. WOOT WOOT!

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!!!
What is an INDEPENDENCE DAY???? It is  "a day celebrating the anniversary of national independence" (Thanks Google!). Here in America it is known as the 4th of July- July 4 1776,  those parties representing the shiny "new land" that is US of A showcased a declaration of independence from the homeland of England (although technically it was settled a year and 2 days prior with the end of the Revolutionary War). Later we bought territories from the nations of Mexico, (with a little skirmish in between), Spain and France, the latter rewarding them for their help in the Revolutionary war with territory that is now known as Canada; and even later, millions of immigrants from all over came flooding in making our "melting pot" what it is today. Not to forget the sacrifices of those were shackled and slaved AND who already resided in this land! FUN FACT: 3 founding fathers (and coincidentally presidents) all died July 4th: Thomas Jefferson & John Adams in 1826, and James Monroe in 1831. Calvin Coolidge (the 30th president) was an independence baby born July 4 1872!

END of July
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO ME (and my sister, 5 years before me)!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday, we checked out  J. Betski's Restaurant up in Raleigh. It is German cuisine and delicious!!! A lot fancier than I am used to (IT HAD DUCK!!!) as it's reservation only with a selected menu all from scratch. My other half was pretty excited about their beer selection too. YAY FOR GERMAN FOOD!!!!! Oh and we mall walked and found a playground while waiting for our reservation time slot. Fun times!

Woohoo! it's been a few months hasn't it!?! Let's see...

APRIL wasn't too bad as we were recuperating/saving for May. This means the Luna Adventures were pretty localized with visiting the usual haunts (parks, plaza's, foods). I also got a tiny bite of the crafting bug again and finished some potholder/hotpads for the kitchen (which I am happy to note are doing well under pressure, lol). I have also thought a lot more seriously about finding ways write out all the plans stuck in my head (it is getting crowded and crazy...and forgetful in there). Luckily there were no localized b-days/celebrations that popped up. Ooooh, I am pretty sure I got some fun crafting toys/tools this month too! Yay for sewing machines and stitch making!!!

MAY was a big month for the Luna girl as she had a b-day of her own. As I might have mentioned, I prefer trips/activities/outings for these (and other) types of celebrations and this year we took the girl to the NC ZOO in Asheboro and then to her chocolate cake in Greensboro,-The Cheesecake Factory- and REI in between. I recommend both (all) of these places! Granted I didn't see much of Asheboro but as it holds the biggest zoo in NC-lots and lots of land space for both the homesteaders (the animals) and the visitors (the people). I believe it is one of the biggest in the USA, also- it is pretty...land-full, whereas Greensboro has a happy little city vibe to the town (in other words people-full). The zoo was oodles and oodles of fun! It took us a good five hours to cover it all. I calculated it to be about 6 miles of tread with all the uphills and downhills included. Heehee. Let's just say our feet needed a good rest afterwards! Luna loved wandering the paths and exploring the kid zones (the favorite, of course, was the man-made river she got to splash in). I must admit though, I think this year, we traded trips. SHE got the children's museum on MY trip and I got the zoo on HERS. :) I went a bit click happy with my phone's camera during this trip (it's becoming a habit) too. Sadly, we found out that our pizza place (Monster's Pizza) closed its doors for good in Jacksonville NC. :(

JUNE has just started but the biggest Luna Adventure thus far are the splash pads. Buckets and buckets full of wet wet wet fun!!!

Took a little extended day trip this weekend with the fam to Raleigh, NC. I didn't see all of it but what i did see was very pretty. An old town-city capital nestled into the forests around it, it has an old downtown feel while still being a sprawling city. We had the pleasure of of "wasting" time in some of the major shopping plazas that we don't see very often anymore (living in a small nowhere town like we do) and  it has some fun restaurants we ate at (Waffle House, BJ's Brewery, Hibachi 88. I even got to sneak into the State Farmer's Market! Mmmm-mmmmm, they had some goodies there! Fruits and veggies (SUPER HUGE TOMATOES!!!), plants/flowers, meat (PIG's HEAD!!!), some eateries, and a really good German Bakery!!! I got me some Marzipan and some apple strudel, and even some chocolate raspberry brownie!!! My person said it was like my mom's birthday cake but less wet, lol (he liked it).

The main attraction, however, was the Marbles Kid Museum. My kid went crazy! Two floors of all things kids play, with each floor having 2-3 major sections. We had some fun imagining at the farm, the veterinary clinic and on all the major vehicles (firetruck, boat, ambulance, news 'copter, city bus, and a red sports car). We also played with a train set, learned with some letters/numbers at their read aloud zone, and dabbled in working with tools and paper/pencil. We had endless fun building with life sized legos and the blue foamed connect blocks. We slowed down and took a gander through the "splash" area with its pirate ship underwater seating and its seeding center attachment. It was an easy 3 hours of kid entertainment that we've had in quite a while and would love to go again!

When we first arrived, I found in Jacksonville, three different indoor play areas that are/were reasonably priced. Sweet P's playhouse (an indoor playhouse that allowed them to rest and read, create the arts, (art supplies, puppets, theater/playhouse play-sets) and an indoor playground set full of climbing, sliding, ball pit, vehicle zooming fun. Jumping Jax (an indoor bounce house that was mainly for smaller children); and Megaplay, a mega version of Jumping Jax that has several different bounce structures for kids of all ages (and their adults), snack bar, lounge seating and arcade game options. It's (well, they all were) a pay once and stay all day family fun adventure. All of them also had fun events and activities for groups and parties. They offer group and military discounts. Parties include a variety of options depending the size/price but not excluding time frames, invites, party hats/favors, and food/drinks.

Sadly due to various reasons, Megaplay beat them all out and is the only one still standing. Due to my child's age and development, Megaplay can only keep her attention for so long, (to be honest, she lasted longer at the Sweet P's). However, she does enjoys throwing the soft plastic balls from the ball pit, sliding down both the bounce slides and the extra long plastic tube-like slides attached to the enclosed jungle-gyms, and playing with all the pieces attached! Woot for the Megaplay Luna adventures!!!

Having trouble keeping your little 'uns from destroying books? Try books they can really sink their teeth into!!! My two year old loves to read, however she has yet to learn the art of gentle handling. Soooooo, I found and got hooked on books she can pretty much do anything to.

1) Indestructibles is a brand name for a wide range of books geared towards little readers that tell a story with little to no print and colorful pictures. Designed by a mama with triplets, they are for exploring babies that are finding out what their little bodies can (chew, rip, slobber/use water, crunch, stomp, etcetera).

2) Other options I have picked up are board books. Board books come in a variety of favorite (or not so favorite) author/illustrator combinations and are sturdy enough to survive a thrashing by small hands (or feet...or teeth). I will advise that the books are for simple reading so the stories might be slightly different than its picture/paper book counterpart.

3) Soft/Cloth books are good for sensory discovery. They are soft to touch and mouth for the teething fussys of the world. They are also brightly colored and simple to explore, often with added excitement by way of pop-ups/3D, touch and feel, noise-maker, and mirror action.

4) My child is fascinated with the books (durably made to last as well as hold sound bites/technology inside of) that offer sound bites/audio. Each story comes with a sounding board/bite picture that corresponds with the picture word depicted in the story. I have recently also scene audio readers that come with little story disks that read out loud with the story writing.

5) Other books I have yet to commit to (mostly due to the little pieces that have detachable abilities) have play mats and action figurines and/or detachable pieces that allow your little one to play out the book scenes and/or let their imagination run wild.

6) Creative types have found ways to convince kids to learn how to do things! Mix media approaches that help them use zippers/buttons, sliders and flaps, and actions (like brushing teeth and tying shoes). In the same concept older kids can enjoy how to's/story-line puzzles and construct booklets and kits that let them explore a new and exciting skill set/talent.

So enjoy your little readers and remember nothing lasts forever!

We took the opportunity given to go to Atlanta GA for a week(ish). It was the first time we visited and we had a fun trip! We crammed lots of activities and experiences (with my click-happy pictures) into the week, the Atlanta zoo, the lego center and a visit to a real life farm, lol. We also enjoyed local eats like the lovely waffle house, an upscale pizzeria and a fun focused hibachi grill (they made a cat out of rice!). There, of course, was interspersed with normal activities: store browsing/shopping, staying "in" and park playing! As it considered a big city, it was busy, busy, busy with lots of people, lots of activities, and not a lot of space...ENJOY!
